What is a Veteran Services Officer?

A Veteran Services Officer (VSO) is a trained, accredited professional who helps veterans, their dependents, and survivors navigate Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) systems. These services are provided at no cost and include benefits counseling, assistance with claims and related forms, and advocacy throughout the claims process. VSOs also help clients understand and respond to VA decisions to ensure they receive the benefits for which they are eligible.

In addition, VSOs connect veterans, dependents, and survivors with appropriate resources beyond the VA, including social services, Department of Defense programs, healthcare, housing assistance, disability services, and records support—tailored to each individual’s needs.
